Why the UK is Ruled by the Queen

The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy. This means that it has a Sovereign—the monarch—at its head who, while not taking an active part in government, is still part of the political system. The political office of the Sovereign is today held by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. She adopted the title of Queen of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms on February 6th, 1952.

The monarch plays a larger role than just being a figurehead. There are formal occasions, such as the State Opening of Parliament, which bring the Queen and her consort, the Duke of Edinburgh, into close contact with Government and politics. When required the Queen formally approves (or ‘signs off’) the formation of a new government after a general election, and approves new laws proposed by Parliament (the Crown retains the right of assent).

At the centre of the modern British state stands the Crown. It is by the Crown that all Governmental and legal acts take effect, and by the Crown is the law enforced. As Head of State the Sovereign is the source of any legitimacy possessed by government, but she is not a party in politics and the Royal Prerogative is the only function of Government which has her express authority.

As Head of State the Queen represents a symbol of continuity and national identity. She is a rallying point for all British citizens in times of national crisis or celebration. Having Her as Queen is seen as a sign of stability and security,at a time when politics can often be seen as unpredictable or dangerous. The UK has also been a constitutional monarchy for centuries, meaning it has a rich and long-standing history of monarchy.

The Queen has many State duties, for example the conferring of honours, the taking of salutes, opening of Parliament, and other occasions. She is at the centre of a unique organisation, which includes the other members of the Royal Family and a large group of staff. Some of her duties require her to be an ambassador for the country, and she meets many people from all walks of life when taking part on official engagements.

The House of Windsor has been ruling Britain since the end of the First World War, when King George V changed the family name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. The Queen herself ascended to the Throne on 6th February 1952, as the nation’s Sovereign. The Queen has now been ruler for over 60 years, during which time the UK has witnessed radical changes and modifications. Nonetheless, it is the importance of having a recognisable face and a respected symbol of continuity which makes the monarchy an institution that the British public still value.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is an experienced and knowledgeable leader who understands the historical and contemporary issues in the UK. Her dignified and stable presence has brought a sense of reassurance to the nation. This stability, as well as the fact that it has historical roots, is why Britain is still ruled by the Queen.
