Suddenly的七种不同表达办法

一、out of the blue（突如其来）

二、all of a sudden（忽然之间）

这是一个比suddenly更文学化的说法，通常用在讲故事，大概叙说已往的事。注意all of a sudden是一个安稳短语，

四个词都不成以随意交换。

I was startled when all of a sudden, the lights went out, and fire alarms went off.

忽然间，灯灭了，消防响起来了，吓了我一跳。

三、all at once（忽然间）

和all of a sudden语义相近。

No man ever became thoroughly bad all at once.

从未有人忽然间完全变坏。

all at once另有另一个语义，指“同时（做几件事）”

四、without warning（毫无征兆地）

warning指“告诫”，没有告诫，毫无征兆，忽然间，恶事就产生了。

The bridge collapsed without any warning.

没有任何征兆地，大桥就塌下去了。

五、at/on short notice（在短时间内）

notice指“关照，被见告”，指所述之事很快就要产生。英式英语中多用on，美式英语中用at。

Thank you for coming at such short notice.

谢谢你这么快就赶来了。

六、abruptly（突如其来）

比拟于suddenly，abruptly的“忽然”有一点不愉快的涵义，好比电视剧忽然被掐断改播倾销。

The interview ended abruptly.

访谈忽然间就那么完毕了。

七、on the spur of the moment（一时冲动）

spur作名词原意指“马刺”，按在靴子后侧，骑马时用来踢马，使其快走。

这里短语on the spur of the moment指的是“不加思索，凭直觉决定”。

On the spur of the moment, we decided to head north that day instead of East.

我们一时冲动，决定不东行，而改为北上。
